Mexicano, explained

How it's played, how to sign up, and how the rankings are worked out. Everything you need to know before your first Sunday.

Game format

How Mexicano is played

Every Sunday we play Mexicano — 16 players per session, four courts, two hours. Pairs change after every round, so you play with new people and the matches stay balanced.

🎾 One round = 4 gamesEach of the four players serves exactly once. The round ends 4–0, 3–1 or 2–2.
➕ The points are yoursYou collect the games your pair wins. Your score follows you all session, whoever you end up playing with.
🔀 New pairs every roundAfter each round the ranking is redone, and pairs are formed by score: first with fourth, second with third.
⚖️ Close matchesBecause players with similar scores end up on the same court, the matches stay competitive — whatever your level.
⏱️ How many roundsWe play rounds until the two hours are up. It's not a fixed number: it depends on how close the games turn out.
🏆 Ranking at the endAt the end of the session all points are added up and the overall ranking comes out. You win on your own, not as a team.

You sign up on the site — 90 lei per person, and the winner of each session takes home a set of balls. See the rankings and archive → · See how to sign up →

Sign-ups

How to sign up

You sign up on the site, with a short form — no account, no app. Name, phone, pick your session, done. (The form is in Romanian, but it only asks for your name, phone and session.)
Go to the registration form →

  • Monday

    Sign-ups open

After the announcement in the group, go to the registration page, enter your name and phone, and tick your session — 08–10, 10–12 or 12–14. You can tick more than one. Last Sunday's top 3 are already on the list, at their session.

  • Until Wed 9:00

    Everyone has the same chance

16 spots per session. It doesn't matter who signs up first: if a session has more than 16 sign-ups, a draw on Wednesday at 9:00 decides who plays, and the rest are reserves, in the order of the draw. With 16 or fewer, everyone plays. (This rule applies from Sunday 18 October.)

  • Wed – Thu 22:00

    Confirm your spot

If you got a spot, go to the registration page, under „Înscrierea mea" (my registration), enter the phone you signed up with and press „Confirm că vin" (I'm coming). The first time from a new phone, WhatsApp opens with a ready-written message, which you send from the number you signed up with. If you haven't confirmed by Thursday 22:00, your spot goes to the first reserve.

Reserves confirm the same way that they're still available. A reserve who hasn't confirmed drops off the list on Thursday at 22:00, and spots that open up go only to confirmed reserves, in the order of the draw. (From Sunday 25 October.)

  • Saturday

    Sign-ups close — 22:00

Withdrawals close earlier, at 10:00. After that, talk to Cristi directly.

  • Sunday

    Play!

    Three sessions: 08–10, 10–12 (mixed) and 12–14 (women's).

What it costs

90 lei per person for a two-hour session — four courts, 16 players, rounds until the time runs out.

The prize

The winner of each session takes home a set of balls.

Women's session (12–14)

Reserved for women. If fewer than 8 women have signed up by Wednesday morning at 9:00, the session becomes mixed for that Sunday.

Withdrawals & penalties

  • You withdraw from the same registration page — the first reserve automatically takes your spot.
  • Withdraw before Thursday 22:00 — no penalty.
  • Withdraw after Thursday 22:00 — 1 week break from sign-ups.
  • No-show — 2 weeks break.

Top 3: guaranteed spot

The top 3 of each session get a guaranteed spot at the same session the following Sunday, no draw. They're put on the list automatically on Monday, when sign-ups open, and confirm their spot by Thursday 22:00, like everyone else. Ranking: points first, then wins; in a complete tie, everyone tied gets in. (Applies from Sunday 18 October.)

The draw

Everyone signed up gets one ticket. If you were a reserve last Sunday and didn't get to play, you get two tickets — double the chance of getting in. A reserve who hasn't confirmed their availability by Thursday drops off the list, so they're no longer a reserve and don't get the double ticket. The draw is done by computer, with a seed that stays saved (it's shown next to the lists on the Mexicano page, in Romanian): with it and the list of sign-ups, the draw can be re-run at any time, with exactly the same result.

Where to check your spot

On the same page, under „Înscrierea mea" (my registration): enter your phone and it shows which sessions you're on — after the draw, also whether you have a spot to confirm. The full lists are here.

Rankings

How scoring works

In a session you play for games. In the monthly ranking what matters is where you finish — your place in each session earns points:

251st place
202nd place
163rd place
134th place
115th place
96th place
77th place
58th place
39th place
110th place

From 11th place down, the session earns no ranking points.

📊 The average counts, not the totalThe monthly ranking is based on the average points per session played. That way the person who comes most often doesn't win automatically — there's a separate attendance ranking for that.
3️⃣ Entry thresholdYou enter the overall ranking after three sessions played in that month. Until then you appear in a separate list, below the table.
🤝 Shared placesTwo players with the same score and the same wins share the place and both get the same points. The next place is skipped.
⚖️ Tie-breaks in a sessionFirst the points collected. If those are equal, the number of matches won decides.
🕗 Each time slot, its own rankingThe three sessions have separate rankings — the groups are different. There's also a combined ranking across all time slots.
🔥 The streakConsecutive Sundays you've played. At four in a row you get a Padel Hub T-shirt. If you signed up but stayed a reserve, the streak freezes, it doesn't break.
